We had a super first full week of school this week and I was happy to meet many of you at Curriculum Night on Wednesday. Here are some highlights from the week: Reading: We are enjoying our "Frindle" novel study....students are reading the book along with me and answering comprehension questions. We also began a series of lessons learning about "reading signposts"....these are places in books where readers should stop and think about how the event that is happening might affect characters, plot or theme. We will continue learning about these signposts next week before we begin our realistic fiction reading unit. Math: We have completed the first 4 lessons in Module 1. Topics that we are working on include multiplying and dividing large numbers by 10 and writing various forms of numbers such as unit form, standard form, word form and expanded form. Next week, we will learn about rounding large numbers. In addition, the class has started using Reflex on their IPad to practice fact fluency as well as Khan Academy. Writing: We have begun our realistic fiction writing unit with students brainstorming story ideas as well as characters for their stories. Next week we will work on setting then drafting a story arc (or plot). Everyone is doing a great job! Word Study: I have formed word study groups and students practiced using their word study workbook as well as Vocabulary A-Z to study their words. As a reminder, students will be assigned a word list each week which I will send home so you can practice spelling the words at home. Students will have a practice test on Thursdays and a final test on Fridays. In other news....picture day is Friday, September 8th! Here are a few pictures from the week:

Even though we were stuck inside because of the crazy heat, we had a great first few days in 4P! We spent a lot of time getting to know each other through partner interviews and games and we also have been spending time establishing our classroom community and routines. This year, we have two new students to Hatch in our class: Calvin Netter who recently moved from New Orleans and Londyn Walker who transferred from Mann Elementary. Please join me in welcoming them and their parents to Hatch! We will begin teaching our regular curriculum this week beginning Monday. Here is a sneak peek into what we'll be working on: Reading: We began our novel study of the book "Frindle" on Friday and hope to get in nearly completed in the coming week. We will read 1-2 chapters per day and students will work on answering comprehension questions about each chapter. On Friday, we worked on questions related to chapter 1, including learning about first person and third person point of view. After the novel study we will begin our realistic fiction reading unit where students will be reading realistic fiction books and working on skills such as character change and identifying the theme of a story. Math: On Friday, the students took a pre-test for our first math unit which focuses on place value. The pre-test helps us identify what gaps students might have before we start the unit. On Monday, we will begin the first unit (or module). We typically complete one lesson per day. I will provide more information about this at Curriculum Night on Wednesday. Word Study: Students took a spelling pre-test on Thursday and Friday and will be placed in word study groups beginning Monday. Students will have a word list each week (which I also send home to parents) and they will work in their word study workbook as well as online to practice spelling the words. They will take a practice spelling test on Thursdays with a final spelling test on Fridays. Other fun stuff:
Welcome to 4P! I'm very excited to meet everyone and begin our learning journey together. In this section of my site, you will find updates on what's happening in our classroom and around the school. I try to update it weekly and will email everyone a link to this page.
