We had a great week in 4P this week, highlighted by kicking off new units in math, reading and writing. Here are a few highlights:
We started our new math unit on multiplication and division with a study of area and perimeter of rectangles. Ask your child how to calculate either one or both! On Monday, we will begin learning different multiplication strategies, beginning with the area model strategy which uses our knowledge of how to calculate area of a square. Everyone is doing a great job!
We also kicked off our new writing unit....personal essays. Students are brainstorming possible topics and we will narrow our thesis ideas down next week and begin drafting. So far, I'm excited about the topics I've seen, ranging from why we should ban plastics to why my cat is the best cat. :)
In reading, we are reading lots of non-fiction books and beginning to learn strategies to read non-fiction well, starting with previewing the text, asking ourselves what we think the text might be about. Next week, we will learn how to spot non-fiction text structures which will help readers make sense of what they are reading.
We ended the week with a brief science assessment on magnetism which will be graded and sent home in the next couple of weeks.
Here are a few pics of 4P in action reading up a storm this week!
