We had a busy week in 4P, highlighted by our first few lessons in science. Students began our Energy unit by learning how to build simple electrical circuits using a battery and a light bulb, then progressed to build more complicated circuits to power a motor with a switch. Next week, we will learn more about conductors and insulators.
In math, we began learning about rounding to the thousands place....students are doing a great job so far! Next week, we will learn to round numbers to the ten thousands and hundreds thousands place and we will take our first math mid module assessment. Students will complete a study guide in class before the assessment.
In reading, we continue reading fiction books and logging our reading time in reading logs. Next week, we will start learning about tracking characters across stories.
In writing, students have completed their pre-writing for their realistic fiction story and will begin drafting next week. Students have come up with a story idea (a character with a desire and a difficulty), wrote about their character's internal and external traits, learned about how to write scenes (versus summaries) and completed their story arcs. I can't wait to see how their stories develop!
For those who signed up for band and orchestra, lessons begin next week (Tuesdays for orchestra and Wednesday for band). Also, chorus is being held on Mondays during lunch for those students who have signed up.
Lastly, I will be scheduling Fall conferences on Wednesday, October 23rd and Wednesday, October 24th after school (Thursday is a half day). We like students to attend conferences if at all possible. I will send out a Sign Up Genius in the next week or so via email.
