I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving break! It's been a busy couple of weeks in 4P! Here are some highlights:
We are marching along in Module 3 in math....we are currently learning long division with a single digit divisor and a 2-3 digit dividend. We've been learning the steps....divide, multiply, subtract and bring down. Ask your child to sing the lyrics to the division rap we've been learning! Next week we will learn about multiples and factors.
In reading we began researching extreme weather topics in research groups this week. Everyone is excited to learn about their topic, put together their report and present their findings. Some groups are in need of additional resources so it would be great if you might take your child to the Oak Park Public Library to perhaps check out a book or two on their topic. As part of this unit, students have also been working on identifying the main idea and supporting details of non-fiction text using text structure, then writing a summary of the text. Next week, we will work on synthesizing information from two texts on the same topic.
Students have been working hard on their personal essays! Most students are almost finished with their drafts and we will finish up final drafts next week!
Lastly, we've also been learning about parts of speech such as onomatopoeia, personification, similes and metaphors, idioms, alliteration and hyperbole. Ask your child about these terms and, if you are reading with them, ask them to help identify these parts of speech when you read!
Just as a reminder, please sign your child's report card envelope and return it to school so we can use the same envelopes for the upcoming two trimesters. Also, we are looking forward to our field trip to the Museum of Science and Industry on Thursday! Thanks in advance to our chaperones Rachel (or Larry?) Rogowin, Kristin Lee and Keri Benbrook.
