We made it through the first 2 weeks! Just a quick update on happenings in 4P this past week:
We kicked off our first math unit which is all about place value. Right now, students are learning how to multiply and divide numbers up to 6 digits by 10. We are using place value charts to model multiplication and division. Next week, we will continue our learning. In terms of homework, students will likely start bringing home their math workbook next week to complete homework assignments if they did not get a chance to work on it during school. There are several math help resources which I plan to share with parents at Curriculum Night next week if you want to help your child at home. If you cannot make Curriculum Night, I can send it to you separately or we can meet to discuss.
We kicked off our first reading unit, reading fiction, by having groups of students respond to quotes from our mentor text "The Tiger Rising" by Kate DiCamillo. We will begin reading this amazing book next week....students will be learning strategies on how to track character change, author's craft and theme in their own books. To kick off the year, we read a book called "Fourth Grade Rats" by Jerry Spinelli and talked about character change and theme that the author develops in the book. Ask your child about how the main character, Suds, changes in the story and what themes (life lessons) we discovered as we finished the book on Friday.
We will also kick off our first writing unit next week, writing narrative fiction. Students will learn how to write engaging stories that hook the reader and build tension throughout the story.
A very exciting part of the week was students receiving their IPads! We have completed several set up lessons and all the students have signed "contracts" about caring for and using their IPad properly. Contracts will be sent home Monday along with the IPads and chargers. Please find a moment to review contracts with your child.
Some key dates next week:
Tuesday, September 10th: MAP Math test (please make sure your child brings in their IPad fully charged).
Wednesday, September 11th: Curriculum Night 6-7pm
Thursday, September 12th: MAP ELA test (please make sure your child brings in their IPad fully charged). We will also be harvesting veggies from the Hatch Patch from 2-2:45....please contact Ms. Guido if you'd like to volunteer to help with our class!
